Complete Home Handiman's Guide by Brian Dettmer, Unique Book Sculpture

Sculpture Details:  Complete Home Handiman's Guide is derived from a book of the same name. Fragmented elements of construction diagrams are deconstructed as they merge in a new environment to create a new construction or machine made of small parts from many different objects and scenes. The book is carved into one layer at a time and nothing is moved or added so my intervention s a true collaboration with the existing book. The book becomes a new scene, a machine, a Rube Goldberg concoction representing labor and function to the point of becoming functionless.

The sculpture is signed, dated, and titled by Brian Dettmer.

Complete Home Handiman's Guide was recently featured in Brian Dettmer’s recent solo show in Barcelona and then in his solo show earlier this year in Maribor, Slovenia as a part of it celebration and designation as the 2012 European Capital of Culture. The book sculpture measures 8.625” x 7.375” x 1.75”

 About the Artist:  Brian Dettmer creates incredible works of art from old books. Using knives, tweezers, and surgical tools, Brian meticulously exposes various layers to create his mind-blowing artwork. Nothing inside the books is relocated or implanted, only removed. Images and ideas are revealed to expose alternate histories and memories. His work is collaboration with the existing material and its past creators and the completed pieces expose new relationships of the book’s internal elements exactly where they have been since their original conception. Dettmer has received critical acclaim around the world and his work can be found in countless galleries and museums throughout the world.
