First Edition, First Printing, 1969
Very Good Condition
This is a first edition, first printing of “A Dog’s Guide to Tokyo” published by W.W. Norton & Co, New York in 1969. Eikoh Hosoe is one of the iconic figures in photography who has published some of the most critically acclaimed photobooks of the past 50 years. Few people realize that he has collaborated on 4 children’s books with Betty Jean Lifton (Hiroshima, Return to Hiroshima, Taka-chan and I, and A Dog’s Guide to Tokyo.) Commenting on the two of books on her website, Betty Jean Lifton wrote, “My silver standard poodle, Jumblie, accompanied me to Japan and wrote “A Dog's Guide To Tokyo”. He wanted to give western dogs a sniff of Japan. "I hope to tease your appetite just enough to make you curious," he wrote. "Give you enough facts to chew on, but leave you still panting for more. Then you will always carry within you the hunger to travel beyond your own backyard…The renowned Japanese photographer, Eikoh Hosoe, shot both “Taka-chan and I” and “A Dog's Guide to Tokyo”. We wanted to know if it was possible to illustrate fantasy with photographs - and it was.”
Measuring approximately 11” x 9”, the book is bound in red cloth-covered boards with a photographically illustrated dust jacket. The book is in Near Fine condition with the ex-libris sticker of “Wolf-the-dog Greene” attached to the inside front cover. The dust jacket is in Good condition with some chips to the spine, soiling to the back, and some tears. The dust jacket is now protected with a mylar cover. Overall, this is a collectible copy of a surprisingly scarce Eikoh Hosoe title.
Photographs of the front and back of the dust jacket as well as several photographs contained in the book appear in the photo section of the listing.
