Six Facsimile Reprints of Significant Pre-war Japanese Photobooks

FINE Condition – Sealed in Original Publishers Cardboard Boxes

This is a complete limited edition set of “Masterpieces of Japanese Photography” published by Kokusho Kankokai, Tokyo during the years 2005 – 2007. “Masterpieces of Japanese Photography” is a lavishly produced collection of six facsimile reprints of historically significant pre-war Japanese photography works and a supplement book. Each volume is a faithful reproduction that is housed in a cardboard box and includes a leaflet with English and Japanese text by Izawa Kotaro and Kaneko Ryuichi providing scholarly background information on the book. The books in the collection by publication date are:

Volume 1 – The Photography of Nakaji Yasui (Yasui Nakaji shashin sakuhin-shu). Originally published in 1942, this volume was issued in 2005 with a limitation of 500 copies. The dimensions of the box are 17” x 12.5”.

Volume 2 – Early Summer Nerves (Shoka Shinkei) by Kiyoshi Koishi. Originally published in 1933, this volume was issued in 2005 with a limitation of 600 copies. The dimensions of the box are 15.5” x 12”.

Volume 3 – Camera Eye x Steel: Composition (Kamera me x tetsu kosei) by Masao Horino. Originally published in 1932, this volume was issued in 2005 with a limitation of 480 copies. The dimensions of the box are 13” x 10”.

Volume 4 – Japan Through a Leica by Ihei Kimura. Originally published in 1939, this volume was issued in 2006 with a limitation of 400 copies. The dimensions of the box are 13.5” x 12.5”.

Volume 5 – Tampei Photography Club: Light (Tampei shashin Club: Hikari). Originally published in 1940, this volume was issued in 2006 with a limitation of 400 copies. The dimensions of the box are 14” x 11.5”.

Volume 6 – Paris and the Seine (Paris Et la Seine) by Shinzo Fukuhara. Originally published in 1922, this volume was issued in 2007 with a limitation of 300 copies. The dimensions of the box are 17” x 14”.

Volume 7 – Supplement – Masterpieces from “Koga” Magazine (Bessatus – Koga kessaku-shu). Originally published in 1932-1933, this volume was issued in 2006. There is no limitation cited. The book measures 8” x 6” and does not come with a cardboard box.

Each volume is in “As New” condition sealed as issued in the original publishers shipping box. The cardboard boxes are in excellent condition with some evidencing minor creases and top closures that are not flush when closed. This is endemic to these titles because of the material used to construct the boxes. Overall, this is an incredible opportunity to obtain a beautiful set of six of the most important Japanese photobooks ever published.

A composite photograph of the complete set, individual photographs of the boxes, and examples of some of the books as contained in cardboard box appear in the photo section of the listing.
