Nadia by Hajime Sawatari, First Edition, 1973
Nadia by Hajime Sawatari
First Edition, First Printing, 1973
This is a first edition, first printing of the highly regarded photobook “Nadia” published by Mainichi Shinbunsha, Tokyo in 1973. Ryuichi Kaneko and Ivan Vartanian in their reference work on Japanese Photobooks, “Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and 70s” provide an excellent critique of “Nadia”, “…in this work the nude becomes something close to the reader as opposed to a removed and unknowable beauty…the pursuit of photography here is self-fulfilling while it finds its ultimate subject in the nude form of a lover…A facsimile edition of “Nadia” was released as part of the Asahi Sonorama series. The initial printing was published in 1977, and the third printing was in 1982. The continued success of this volume reflects the photobook’s appeal to young photographers who became reacquainted with the nude subject as something personal and intimate.”
Containing 90 black-and-white high quality gravure photographs, the book measures approximately 11 x 12” and is bound in photographically illustrated wraps. The condition of the book is FINE- with very minimal surface wear to the wraps. Overall, this is an exceptional copy of a rare photobook title that is rarely found in such wonderful condition.
Cited in the reference work on Japanese Photobooks, “Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and 70s” by Ryuichi Kaneko and Ivan Vartanian.
Photographs of the front and back of the wraps as well as photographs from the book appear in the photo section of the listing.
