O Rio de Janeiro by Bruce Weber

First Edition, First Printing, 1986

Signed and Inscribed by Bruce Weber to Ralph Gibson

FINE Condition

This is a signed and inscribed association copy of the first edition, first printing of the critically acclaimed photobook “O Rio de Janeiro” published by Alfred A. Knopf, New York, in 1986. Containing 144 spectacular color and duotone full-page gravures (four folding), the book is an intimate photo-essay that features images of sculpted fashionable young people and the sensual Rio de Janeiro scene. Bruce Weber has produced a formidable list of wonderful photobooks throughout the years but “O Rio de Janeiro” still remains his most popular and sought after book. Writing in ““The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century” Vince Aletti states, “O Rio is most successful as a carefully planned act of seduction…Weber has turned his trademark fiction of youthful exuberance and sexy camaraderie into a fast-paced montage intercut with landscapes, still lifes, news photos and family snapshots.”

Measuring approximately 11” x 14”, the book is bound in photographically illustrated flexible boards. The book and the covers are in FINE condition.

The book is warmly inscribed, signed, and dated by Bruce Weber to Ralph Gibson and his wife on the title page. Ralph Gibson was the pioneering founder of Lustrum Press, whose collaborative approach revolutionized the photobook by offering photographers such as Larry Clark and Robert Frank "a market for the kind of highly personal photography books that regular publishers usually fear to touch" (New York Times).

This is a great opportunity to obtain a unique signed and inscribed association copy of a critically acclaimed photobook in remarkable condition.

Cited in “The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century” by Andrew Roth.

Photographs of the book, the signature page, and some stock photographs contained in the book appear in the photo section of the listing.
