This is a signed limited edition of "The Bridge: A Poem” published by the Limited Edition Club in 1981 with a limitation of 2000 copies this being number 1848. The book features the wonderful photographs of the Brooklyn Bridge by Richard Mead Benson that accompany Hard Crane’s modern classic. Bright, volatile, short-lived and hard-drinking, Crane was in some ways an archetype of the Roaring Twenties author. Crane is best known for The Bridge (1930), an epic vision of American life with the Brooklyn Bridge as a central image. Crane is often compared to Walt Whitman, both for his modern American sensibilities and for the homoerotic imagery some find in his work. In sheer style Crane also resembled T.S. Eliot, whom he admired. Crane committed suicide by leaping from the S.S. Orizaba in 1932.

The book is illustrated with one double-page and four full-page photographs by Richard Benson which were printed in a 300 line screen process by Meriden Gravure Co. The book was designed by Stephen Stinehour and printed by Michael & Winifred Bixler. The text is set in Monotype Dante and printed on soft-white Mohawk smooth wove paper. The binding was done at the Stinehour Press in full silver-gray Dutch natural finish cloth and is housed in the original blue paper covered cloth slipcase.

The book is in FINE condition and the slipcase in in FINE- condition with a few minor rubs along the edges. The book has been signed by Richard Mead Benson on the limitation page.

Photographs of the book and slipcase as well as some photographs from the book appear in the photo section of the listing.
