This is a signed limited edition of "Three Poems” published by the Limited Edition Club in 1987 with a limitation of 750 copies this being number 470. Commenting on the collaboration between Paz and Motherwell, Artsy wrote, “My vocabulary works like poetry,” Robert Motherwell once said of his artwork’s visual language. “It is not an illustration but a series of explosions, fireworks or, on the contrary, a kind of contained silence.” Motherwell, a well-known lover of poetry, befriended a number of celebrated writers over the course of his career. One of them was his dear friend Octavio Paz, a prolific Mexican poet, essayist, and Nobel Prize winner. After dedicating several works to one another, Motherwell and Paz finally collaborated to produce Three Poems. The 27 lithographs accompanied by Paz’s poetry translated into English, was initially inspired by the duo’s vacation in Mexico in 1967. After a small initial run in 1981–82, the complete set was revived by the New York print shop, the Limited Editions Club, in an edition of 750 in 1987.”
Measuring approximately 22” by 18.5”, the book was bound by hand using natural Irish linen with black titling to the spine and an original Robert Motherwell lithograph recessed into the front cover. The lithographs were printed at Trestle Editions, New York on handmade Japanese paper of various contrasting colors and hand-mounted on the same Magnani Italian mould-made paper. Each lithograph is protected by a tissue guard. The text was printed at the Wild Carrot Letterpress, Stamperia Valdonega, and Heritage Printers with the Spanish text appearing in red type and the English translation by Eliot Weinberger appearing in black on the opposite page. The book is housed in a clamshell box covered in the same natural Irish linen as the book. Also included in the clamshell box is the first viewing invitation to the opening of the exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art featuring Motherwell's work and a T.L.S. from Sidney Shiff to Lee Temares praising the exhibition.
The book is signed by Octavio Paz and Robert Motherwell on the limitation page.
