From the publisher, "Considered by many the greatest novel of the 20th century, Joyce's Ulysses deserved this typographical tribute, painstaking craftsmanship, and the artistic contribution of a painter of international stature. Robert Motherwell (1915-1991), a founder of Abstract Expressionism, counted Joyce as his favorite modern author and drew upon the writings for titles to his paintings, drawings, and prints throughout his career. The project was four years in planning and a year and a half in production.”

The book is presented in a slipcase covered with the same fabric as the book and has a paper spine label. The type is Monotype and handset Perpetua, printed by letterpress on French mouldmade Johannot. The intaglio printing was done by R. E. Townsend, Inc., Georgetown, Massachusetts, in black and 19 colors on heavier-weight Johannot. The book is signed by Robert Motherwell on the limitation page.
