FINE- Condition

Binding Details:  A beautiful contemporary full signed leather binding of Army Green cowhide leather with a spine treatment of raised bands. The front cover is foil stamped with the title, author, publisher, and date and features black foilstamped cannons and ribbon award inlays. The interior pages were stitched with Irish Linen thread and archival material was used for the boards and endsheets. There are silk head and tail bands as well as gold gilded page ends. The C&H gold foil sticker is attached to the bottom of the first free endpaper.  

Book Details:  This is the first edition, first printing of “The Story of the War of 1898” published by Peter Fenelon Collier, New York, in 1898 that is profusely illustrated by some of the turn-of-the-century's best illustrators, artists, and photographers. W. Nephew King's opus gives not only strategic and tactical overviews of the military operations during the Spanish-American War and early days of the Philippine Revolt but it also offers a keen insight into the period's patriotic values. The book contains 7 color illustrations including foldouts, 61 full-page black-and-white photographs and illustrations, plus hundreds of smaller photos and drawings as well as detailed first-hand accounts.

Measuring 19.5” x 12.5” x 2” and weighing approximately 18 pounds, the book is printed on very heavy paper and contains 312 pages as well as introductory essays by Captain Robley D. Evans, United States Navy and Major General O.O. Howard, United States Army.

Condition Report:  The binding is in FINE- condition with minimal surface wear and some marks to the gold gilted page ends. Internally, the book is very clean with some superficial soiling to a few pages. There are no signs of previous ownership. Overall, this is a wonderful signed leather binding that houses an incredible illustrated history of the Spanish American War.
