Shaw’s critically acclaimed novel explores the lives of 3 ordinary soldiers (2 American and 1 German) during the course of World War II. Along with The Naked and Dead and From Here to Eternity, it is considered one of the greatest war novels ever written.
The basis for the 1958 movie by Edward Dmytryk starring Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, Dean Martin, and Hope Lange.
